What’s next for SPR, VT, and STW
- Special Purpose Research for liquid accredited investors.
- Vale Tudo for performance and longevity.
- Sifting the World for getting my best ideas first.
So far, 23 paid subscribers joined StW Special Purpose Research, my research service for accredited investors with $250k to allocate to an illiquid investment category that I am personally heavily invested in. The non-paid subscribers won’t get any content but can be used as a waitlist for subscribing after the subscription offering closes at 50.
1,081 people subscribed to Vale Tudo, my free personal newsletter.
37,393 people follow me on Seeking Alpha, where I first share my best investment ideas with StW members.
I’m not looking for growth for growth’s sake. Instead, I think of this as a sorting process in which I hope and expect that investors and readers include themselves in anything that I do that is a good fit for them and exclude themselves from anything that isn’t. I enjoy researching and writing, so the effort of creating content is all upside for me. I write about what I like. Welcome and thank you to everyone who follows my investing ideas on Seeking Alpha, fitness ideas on Substack, or more recently my regulatory arbitrage idea on StW Special Purpose Research. It is fun to have an audience but important to have the right audience. My intention is for this to self-select overtime — on Seeking Alpha, the goal is to select for long-term value investors interested in exploiting corporate events for profit. It is also to lose those less philosophically aligned.
On Vale Tudo, my goal is to select for people trying to optimize both performance and longevity. Lots of people are obsessive about one or the other. There are gym bros want to go heavy by any means necessary without concern for safety. There are docs and some rich weirdos who want to live forever without enough concern for their life in the interim. I want both performance today and an ability to keep getting after it with my grandkids and great grandkids someday.
On SPR, it is to select for accredited investors with both liquidity ($250k available on day one) and a long-term outlook (5 years for a project) and a willingness to spend some time in implementation (as much as 5 hours). In each case some churn can be a good thing. I want to maximize the value I provide to the intended audiences while minimizing distractions from others. I know I’ve failed a little bit whenever I’m turned from a research-oriented hedge fund manager into a customer support representative answering IT questions or explaining why someone’s stock went up or down a few percent. The faster they leave, the better for both of us. Perhaps the greatest innovation in StW has been the Members Lounge and Discussion channel which I leave to members. That way they can discuss whatever they want and I can go deep dives on research projects with maximal focus, which ultimately benefits members as well as me.
What’s next?
For SPR: Monday January 8, 2024 we begin setting up accounts. I turn my attention from answering questions from potential subscribers to moving forward with subscribers. This should be fun and lucrative. It is what my wife and I do with our accounts; this offers the same to a few dozen like-minded peers. If you’re a free subscriber, please unsubscribe if you’re a no, pay up if you’re a yes, or ask if you still have questions.
For Vale Tudo: I hope to be climbing mountains again within a few months. Unclear how realistic that will be. Recovery is hard — my resting heart rate is normally about 40, went to 80(!) after my PEs, and is back to 60. Deadlifts went from 500 to 250 and is back to 315 lbs. 2,000 meters on the C3 rower went from 7 to 9 now 8:30 minutes. Rather gutting to have lost so much ground but surviving.
For StW members: A day late and a dollar short — My best idea for 2024 drops tomorrow. I offer a basket of opportunities as well as a specific edgy actionable security that is my LSW’s largest exposure, replacing TWTR, RENN, and EBC before it. She overhears 2–3 new ideas each day for 25 years and liked about half a dozen of them so far including this one. It has been bollixed up in compliance for months but is (finally!) ready.
Caveat
I love sharing my best ideas. But triaging my time, energy, and resources requires a lot of focus. I love inbound suggestions but I get a lot, so am typically decisive about not pursuing stuff beneath my top few priorities.
Conclusion
Thanks for reading — I’m excited for SPR, VT, and STW in 2024!
TL; DR
My partnerships, subscriptions, and memberships have 2-way doors. Please include yourself in or out of whatever makes sense for you. I wish you well either way.
