Will Anora Sweep Oscars?
Putin roots for it.
The film’s success inadvertently mirrors that of Putinism in general right now.
- Michael Idov
Anora is up for six Oscars tonight. Its prospects have been closely watched and touted by Russian state media. While many Russian actors have been blacklisted by the Kremlins, Anora’s Russian connections remained in good stead with Putin.
What do you think the Academy will do? Will they make Putin’s night. I’m not so sure. We’ll know in a few hours. We know that Americans are generally less sympathetic to Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war and that it is more pronounced among Democrats.
Political donations show that members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), responsible for the Oscars, skew strongly to Democrats.
You can place your bets here (and get a free $10 bet). Which movie will win the most Oscars? I’m a no on Anora. How many Oscars will “Anora” win? I’m a no on 5 and 4.
Caveat
I didn’t see any of the nominees, typically haven’t, go to sleep (now) before the show starts, and don’t know anything about movies.
Conclusion
I don’t think Russians will outperform their betting market odds at the 2025 Oscars.
TL; DR
I’m an incorrigible degen with bets on a movie I didn’t watch in an award show I won’t watch. Buyer (all kinds of) beware.
